I bet it's really annoying how much I'm saying "Avatar Pentagram" but if you really hate it, why do you keep reading because now you know I'm just going to keep talking saying "Avatar", "Pentagram", and "Avatar Pentagram" over and over and over again. I should also probably use the words "Last Airbender" and "Wicca" a lot too. For those of you who do not know the show, Avatar is not in any way related to the blue aliens in that movie that was essentially just dances with wolves on another planet with a happy ending. No, Avatar THE LAST AIRBENDER is a children's show on Nickelodeon that is also popular among adults especially Wiccans (practitioners of the religion Wicca [HA! There, got that word in]) The premise is that in a time period that is unclear whether it is past, future, or present (but on another planet), the world has boiled down to only four nations; the earth kingdoms (formal cities all over the world governed by individual kings), water tribes (two organized icy cities on the north and south poles along with less familiar hick-fraternities hidden in highly vegetated swamps), the fire nation (one large mainland and some volcanic islands governed by a hierarchy lead by the Fire Lord who's power is unclear whether monarchic or dictating in nature), and the Air Nomads (Unrelated multiple series of cliff and mountain based buildings resembling Buddhist monasteries "lead" by a council of one head monk and four other monks with seniority but who's input is slightly less important). Though much of the style of the animation and cultural references of Avatar: the Last Airbender point towards the American show being entirely based on Asian culture, message wise, Avatar seems much more based in Wiccan theology. Much of the population in Avatar has the supernatural ability to control one of the four elements that are both names of the nations and the bottom points of the pentagram called bending. Though much of the ability to bend seems to come from either some form of heredity (considering that children are never born firebenders in the water tribe or anything like that) or by being directly trained by the element's symbolic animal and performing moves from different types of martial arts, Wiccan beliefs come into play due to the fact that the ability to bend an element also requires a mindset unique to that element. Earthbending requires confidence yet patience. Waterbending requires serenity yet decisiveness. Firebending requires passion yet discipline. Airbending requires spirit yet detachment. For each of the above, it is possible to become a very good bender while only expressing the former of each and not the latter but it is impossible to be a master because the art is marred and in the case of practicing firebending with passion but without discipline, of high potential for harm. Where the filth and top point of the PENTAGRAM, Spirit, applies in AVATAR (avatar pentagram avatar pentagram avatar pentagram) is about what the avatar itself is. In the simplest definition, the avatar is the only person in the whole fictitious world capable of controlling all four elements. However, the avatar also has other traits such as being perpetually reincarnated, calling on the power of past lives in a unique consciousness called the avatar state (however perpetual reincarnation will be stopped if the avatar is killed in the avatar state. This mostly likely is because doing so would essentially simultaneously kill all the past avatars as well), venturing into the spirit world (an afterlife state sometimes represented as being able to see ghosts invisible to the mortal eye; sometimes as a large swamp completely separate from any earthly setting), using meditation to conjure the knowledge of past avatars, and being an altogether more powerful bender than even the most experienced masters. Along with the fact that the avatar was created as a cosmic self defense mechanism, the avatar is also so powerful because it is enlightened by understanding the nature of all four elements, not just one. The way the Wiccan pentagram is interpreted through Avatar: the Last Airbender is not so much that spirit, divinity, man, or whatever the top point has been labeled as in the scenario is to govern the natural world but that the fifth point is the sum of the lower four. That the truly wise person draws from all the symbolism of the elements; confidence with patience, serenity with decisiveness, passion with discipline, and spirit with detachment, taking it in moderation and equality to conduct themselves in a way that is divine and being our own avatars. This is the elegance of the avatar pentagram.
